Inspiration: NYC subway map

A subway map is a very common kind of information visualization. The goal of the map on the attached website (click the image) is making it easy for people to find their way through one of the most complex network of subways, the one in New York. The website shows a comparison between the map in use in 2004 and a redesign. Although the redesign is visually more abstract and geographically less accurate, it actually works better in navigating the city. It provides a better overview, is less crowded, easier on the eyes and still manages to incorporate even more relevant information than the original design. In my opinion an effective visualization of complex information.
